Performance First® HR Tool Kit
Provides "Ready Made Tools" That Streamline
HR Management Practices
The Canadian special
events industry is alive and well and event
planners are making an impact on the
international community. In January, US based
Special Events Magazine, honored the best
work in the international special event
industry at its gala awards ceremony in
Phoenix, Arizona. Eight Canadian companies
were nominated within 36 categories. Sensix
Communications & Events, of Montreal
walked away with two awards - one for "Best
Achievement in Logistics" and the other for
"Best Entertainment Concept and Execution,
Entertainment Budget $25,000 to $100,000."
The ceremony was attended by more than 900
guests from 20 countries.
Chris Lowe, President of the Canadian
Special Events Society (CSES) and owner of
Lowe & Associates, an event planning and
conference management company in Burnaby, BC
is optimistic about the future of special
events in Canada. "We are expecting the
special event industry to pick up in 2002
after a major slow down during the fall of
2001," says Mr. Lowe. "Event planners are
telling us they expect to have an increase in
revenue this year and many have seen an
unprecedented increase in events held in
Canada by US and international companies post
September 11th."
The Canadian Special Events Society (CSES)
based in Vancouver, is a forum for members to
network with other members, disseminate
industry developments, promote members to
their peers and potential clients, and
provide professional development
opportunities. CSES are supporters of Special
Event Co-ordinator and Special Event Manager
National Professional Certification. The
Professional Certification designation is
granted to individuals by the Canadian
Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC) for
completing an evaluation process based on
National Occupational Standards set by
industry professionals. The program is
delivered by provincial and territorial
tourism education council's and associations.
Mr. Lowe became a Professionally Certified
Special Events Co-ordinator last year, as did
Elana Gold, out going President of CSES and
owner of WOW! Productions, an event planning
and production company in Richmond, BC. Her
desire to become Professionally Certified,
stemmed from a commitment to "uphold the
professional standards of the special events
industry, the wish to demonstrate
professional credibility and provide proof of
expertise."
Sarah Zulfi, became a Professionally
Certified Special Events Co-ordinator in
January while working in that capacity at the
University of Manitoba. She is currently
working on the university's 125th Anniversary
Celebration in addition to other projects.
Mike Smajda, Nova Scotia's first
Professionally Certified Special Events
Co-ordinator, is responsible for
co-ordinating the Multicultural Festival in
Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, a three day event in
June attended by over 45,000 people. From
January 2000 to March 2001, 108 candidates
received Professional Certification as
Special Events Co-ordinators and 12
candidates as Special Event Managers.
